As the longest day approaches on June 20th, it's an ideal time to take advantage of the extended daylight and spend time in the garden. Here are my top 5 gardening tasks for this month.

  1. Tie in stems of climbing and rambling roses

This month, roses are experiencing significant growth, so tie the stems as horizontally as possible to promote new blooms.

Peach and white roses bloom vibrantly against a wooden fence, with lush greenery in the background under an overcast sky.

    2. Prune late Spring/early Summer flowering shrubs

This month is ideal for thinning out older stems of shrubs such as Weigela and Philadelphus.

Close-up of pink flower buds with yellow-edged green leaves, set against a blurred garden background. Bright and vibrant colors.

    3. Prune Spring flowering shrubs

Trim spring-blooming shrubs such as Kerria and Choisya once they have finished flowering to promote additional blooming.

Close-up of lush green foliage and clusters of small buds with light pink tips, creating a tranquil, natural ambiance.

    4. Prune Clematis Armandii

Trim Clematis Armandii to maintain its designated space.

White and light pink clematis flowers bloom against a wooden fence, with green leaves and buds, creating a serene and natural scene.

    5. Stake tall plants

Support tall plants such as Verbena and Veronicastrum with stakes to avoid flopping and breakage.

I hope you enjoy the time outside this month.
