Top 5 October Gardening Jobs

The days are getting shorter and it's starting to feel a bit more Autumnal. There's still lots to be done in the garden to prepare it for Winter and Spring. Here's my top 5 jobs for this October.

  1. Plant Spring flowering bulbs

Plant Spring flowering bulbs such as Daffodils, Crocuses and Snakes head fritillaries this month for a colourful display next Spring.

2. Make leaf mould

Collect fallen leaves and store in a net or bin bag to produce lovely leaf mould for next year which can be used as a beneficial mulch for your garden.

3. Lift & Divide herbaceous perennials

Now is the time to create some extra plants for free. Lift and divide any congested herbaceous perennials including Geraniums or Astrantias.

4. Aerate compacted lawns

Use a garden fork to aerate any compacted lawns and fill with grit to improve drainage

5. Create Winter containers

Add a splash of colour to the Winter garden with container displays of Heather, Cyclamen and Skimmia.
