October is an extremely active month in the garden. From planting bulbs to applying mulch, there are numerous tasks to tackle. Here are my top 5 tasks for this month.

  1. Plant Spring Bulbs

Vibrant purple crocuses with bright orange centers bloom against a dark soil background, capturing a fresh and lively spring mood.

This month is ideal for planting early Spring bulbs, particularly those that are naturalised in lawns. Consider Crocus, Narcissi, and Fritillaries for an early burst of color in the season.

  1. Transplant Deciduous Shrubs

Do you have a deciduous shrub that is either misplaced or not thriving? This month is ideal for relocating them, as the soil remains warm and the shrubs are dormant.

  1. Collect Fallen Leaves

Colorful autumn leaves scattered on the ground, with prominent red and yellow hues, creating a warm and natural fall scene.

Create a free soil conditioner by gathering Autumn leaves, placing them in a bin bag or containers, and allowing them to decompose into leaf mould.

  1. Divide Herbaceous Perennials

Generate new plants by separating crowded clusters into multiple individual plants. This method is ideal for herbaceous perennials such as Geraniums, Hylotelephium, and Astrantias.

  1. Mulch your borders

Applying a mulch of composted bark, leaf mold, or mushroom compost around your plants can aid in moisture retention in the beds, suppress weed growth, and enhance soil structure. Make sure the mulch is at least 5cm deep and keep it away from the woody stems of shrubs and trees to prevent rot due to extended contact.

Relish the autumn season in your garden. With the vibrant colors and shorter days, it truly is a magical time in the garden.
