April Jobs for the Garden

The Easter weekend is just around the corner. It's the perfect time to get out in your garden and do those important tasks to get your Spring garden ready for the growing season.

Here's my top 5 jobs for the garden this month:

  1. Deadhead daffodils and tulips

As the flowers fades deadhead so that the plant doesn't put energy into setting seed. Leave the foliage to die back naturally though to help ensure better blooms next year.

2. Prune Hydrangeas

Cut back old stems on Hydrangeas to a healthy shoot below.

3. Check for aphids on roses

Regularly check the new growth on Roses and Clematis for aphid infestations. Pick them off if you can but if the infestation is too large use a fatty acid or plant oil based organic spray such as Doff Greenfly & Blackfly killer or Vitax plant guard pest & disease control.

4. Cut back any brown or tatty fronds on ferns

Ferns will have the knuckles of new growth visible now so cut off any brown or broken fronds to encourage the new fronds to unfurl.

5. Feed your lawn

Boost your lawn growth with a nitrogen rich lawn feed.

Happy Easter!
