My client had a very specific brief - to create an E12 New Orleans style garden in his compact L-shaped courtyard in East London. Through my research I found that the gardens of New Orleans are a interesting combination of tropical planting and French Renaissance style hardscapes, due to the Louisiana location and French colonial influence.
Black wrought iron, brick raised beds, large stone planters and climber adorned walls all feature strongly as does tropical style, mainly evergreen planting.
The existing lap panel fencing has been replaced with a dark brown stained fence which provides a contrasting foil to the green foliage and white, pink and purple flowers.
A herringbone laid clay paver patio harmonises with the red brick raised beds and existing brick walls and creates a space for dining with additional perching spots provided by the raised beds.
The view through the crittal style kitchen doors is key to the design so the raised beds are equidistant from the doors and striking Tree Ferns offer focal points either side. A custom made black metal verandah frames the doors and will be softened with a fragrant Wisteria draped around it.
A bench flanked by two large Ironstone planters containing Astelia 'Silver Spear' offers a perching spot in afternoon sun and has a view of a feature Ironstone pot planted with striking Agapanthus.
The side return, which was previously unused, has been transformed by a black wooden pergola, sandstone pavers set within gravel and lush shade loving planting. A central bench offers a shady seating spot with a view of climbers wrapped around wrought iron gate trellis.
Festoon lighting ensures this garden is usable for relaxation and entertainment into the evening.
I look forward to seeing this garden develop and for comparsion here's how it looked before.
