Infusing a bit of Louisiana into East London, my E12 New Orleans Style Courtyard was finished in October of last year. My client graciously shared some recent photos, and it appears to be thriving beautifully.

The vibrant tropical-style plants provide a striking contrast to the dark fencing, red brick, and clay pavers, resulting in a garden that feels refreshing and welcoming. Trachelospermum jasminoides (evergreen Jasmine) is trained along trellis wires and will gradually soften the appearance of the fencing. Wisteria sinensis is beginning to wind around the custom metal verandah and will eventually frame the 'Crittal style doors' with its fragrant racemes.
The terracotta and ironstone planters placed throughout the garden echo the red brick and clay paver colors, adding drama with architectural plants.

The Dicksonia tree fern positioned in the corner serves as a captivating focal point, complemented by Vinca minor 'Atropurpurea' planted beneath it to soften the edges of the brick raised beds. Euphorbia amygdaloides robbiae, Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost', and Zantedeschia contribute to a lush understory beneath the trees.

The bench is surrounded by plants, with existing Laurel and Olive trees on one side and a large planter with Astelia 'Silver Spear' on the other. My client has also added a Fatsia japonica in a barrel planter and a potted Laurel. Eventually, Trachelospermum will cover the fencing behind, providing a fragrant backdrop.

The once-unused side return has been converted into an alternative shaded seating area featuring a black wooden pergola, festoon lighting, and reclaimed wrought iron gates serving as a wall trellis to train shade-loving Hydrangea petiolaris.
I am eager to see how the garden develops, particularly as the climbers begin to cover the boundaries.
